Zillow Mobile Engineering

The engineering team at Zillow has been cranking out innovative products since we first launched our website back in 2006. We are launching this blog to share and discuss some of the technology and product insights we have encountered along the way. All of the posts will come from members of the engineering team, and will focus on:

  1. New product features and the technology backing them.
  2. Cool technologies we have come across.
  3. Insights into our culture.
  4. Thoughts on product development processes.
  5. Recaps (and sometimes video) from our Zillow Speaker series.
  6. Anything else we think might be of general interest!

Of course, we won’t share all the secrets, but we hope there will be good give-and-take from others in the developer community. Feel free to let us know if there are topics you would like to discuss or questions you might have regarding our technology stack. There is quite a bit running behind the scenes that makes the Zillow mobile apps and website run smoothly, and we look forward to sharing some of the things we have learned along the way.

Open source technologies, agile development processes and a quest for innovation are at the heart of all we do on the Zillow engineering team. We hope you engage in the discussions and enjoy a peek behind the curtain.

Hey I love your site. Its been a goto for me since I sold a house in 2009. In my new state, im in an apartment now and my kids are established here. It would be nice if I could overlay available homes on top of my 2 kids school maps so that I could search for a home that would allow them to remain in the same schools.

    Can yall do that?

Thanks for the suggestion. School information is vital to home shopping and we are continuing to look for ways to integrate the two.

I use Zillow to identify distressed homes as candidates for fix & flips. A tool that would help me immensely would be a feature that allows me to “Don’t show this home/property again” in searches or lists.

Thanks for your suggestion. Previously viewed homes will show a lighter color icon, but you can’t currently say “don’t show me this again”.
